Poison Spyder Steering Box Skid Plate

Article written by Rico

Date Added: 04/20/2006

Another vulnerable spot specific to TJ's is the steering pump, located just under the driver's side bumper.

After installing the Poison Spyder "Rocker Knockers" (click here for review of "Rocker Knockers") we were so impressed by the design, manufacturing of the welds and overall appearance that Project TJ Spyder Byte was born. Specifically, we wanted to outfit the Jeep in as much Poison Spyder Armor as we could lay our hands on. Another vulnerable spot specific to TJ's is the steering pump, located just under the driver's side bumper.

Key Features -Solid 3/16" laser plate steel -Does its job of protecting both front and side impacts, unlike some of its competitors (look at other write-ups on this site) -Installation is a combination of bolt-on and suggested very minor drilling.

Installation

1. This was a fairly easy install. The plate has 4 bolt holes, 3 of which line up perfectly with installed hardware. When you take the plate and prop it against the steering box you'll see it fits perfectly.

2. The kit comes with a bolt, nut, and washer, and the instructions recommended drilling for the forth bolt adding extra security. I chose not to add the 4th securing point due to the fact that we are replacing the bumper in a couple of months. Even without the 4th secured point this skid plate is not going anywhere.

3. Finished!

Final Thoughts

With the Poison Spyder steering skid in place, we were able run all over Moab bumping and grinding on the rocks with pure confidence that all was protected.

With two pieces of armor on the Jeep, from the great crew at Poison Spyder, it's starting to feel like the Jeep is "growing up".

I highly recommend this skid plate for any TJ owner. The steering box is extremely vulnerable.
