Why Discount Tire?

Article written by Moab Man

Date Added: 11/16/2008

Like tires, tire companies come in all types and sizes. One; however, stands out above all the rest - Discount Tire.

When MOABJEEPER Magazine decided to get some new shoes for our project JK, the BEAST, we decided to check everyone's offerings in the area. Our search ranged from your local mom and pop tire store, to 4x4 shops, on up to the big name vendors in the tire game. When all was said and done, there unequivocally was no choice but Discount Tire.

Of course some of you may have a favorite tire shop, or maybe you feel that a big tire chain couldn't serve your hardcore needs. We had a similar mindset and as a result were paying too much and getting too little for our money for too many years to count... until we decided shake off what we thought we knew.
Lets go point-by-point.

You drive a Jeep that isn't a mall crawler. You don't want the fashionable mud tires simply for their stellar good looks. Put simply... you want some serious meats under your rig, and you're going to use them.

For this reason, you probably never considered Discount Tire, nor had we. In talking with Bryan of the Layton, Utah Discount Tire he put it best saying "If it's a tire... we can get it." Taking that as a challenge, we rattled off a few of the smaller niche-brand tires common to our local 4x4 shops. Bryan's response.. "No problem."

Of course a 4X4 shop is more likely to have some of the larger, more serious tires on hand right now, but there is more to owning a tire when it's purchased through Discount Tire. For example, consider the Cooper Discoverer STT 35" tires that we put on our project JK. There is NO manufacturer warranty (at least none that we or anyone else we asked can find) offered on this tire. This leaves you at the mercy of the shop you buy them from in the event of some type of failure. This is not the case with Discount Tire on our Cooper's, or your preferred niche hardcore tire. Discount Tire covers all tires sold through them with their Road Hazard Warranty.
Road Hazard Warranty? Ok, ok... you're not buying your off-road tires for the ROAD hazard warranty. Well how about if I tell you their warranty carries on where the pavement ends. That's right, Discount Tire will warranty trail damage provided we're not talking about blatant abuse.
Lets clarify abuse: You drive your tire into a campfire, park the vehicle, and leave it there for a few hours. This would qualify as abuse. And while Discount Tire may not say it, we will - if you asked for them to warranty the tire, you're an idiot.
Now that we have separated out those in the lower deeper part of the gene pool, you're wheeling a trail and your tire gets a nasty, unrepairable gash. This honest trail damage would be covered.
Finally, the least appreciated, but most important when maximizing your tire's bang-for-buck... Discount Tire's lifetime balance and rotation. Here at MOABJEEPER Magazine we can't tell you how many times we have heard people on the trail complain about the short life of their off-road tires. Number one reason? The tires have never been rotated or balanced. Most people just don't want to spend the cash every 6k miles because their local 4x4 shop sure won't do it for free. Therefore they fail to see the long term benefits of regular rotation and balance.

Final Thoughts

I know what you're thinking, but your wrong. Discount Tire is NOT a sponsor or MOABJEEPER Magazine. Maybe someday they will, maybe they won't. This is genuine praise based on the best experience we've ever had at a tire store. Either way, Discount Tire offers more than just tires: outstanding prices, road hazard warranty, lifetime rotation & balance, and the backing of a national chain so that we can wheel the country one state at a time and know they have our backs if a tire should fail 1,200 miles from home.
