Torque Monster Throttle Body Spacer

Article written by Moab Man

Date Added: 05/04/2006

From the first modification, usually larger tires, four wheelers all come to the same conclusion...WE NEED MORE POWER!

There is no shortage of "snake oil" bolt-on performance products on the market. And just like snake oil cures of long ago, most of their claims of mileage and power gains are unproven. Some of the better of these performance products will offer some third party proof. But this "proof" comes with one of those pesky little asterisks making reference to the laundry list of modifications required to duplicate these incredible gains. With all the other mods involved, you wonder how much the the product itself, actually did?

Each Torque Monster throttle body spacer comes with all the necessary gaskets, bolts, and spacers. Be sure to specify 2.5 or 4.0 engine size to receive the correct parts.

For those of us that like a straight answer with no pesky little asterisks, LiteGrip.com brings the Torque Monster throttle body spacer.
It stands a solid two inches tall. Around the outside of the Torque Monster are fins to improve cooling. Between the fins, on all sides, grooves are cut in a concave pattern as shown by the pennies in the picture. This concave cut improves the cooling efficiency of the fins.
4.0 Inline Six

So what gains can you expect to see from the Torque Monster?

Dyno testing was done on two stock vehicles, a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee & 99 Jeep Cherokee, each equipped with 4.0 inline 6 motors. The results showed us consistent and impressive numbers of 18-20 ft. lbs of torque, and 6-8 horsepower gain.

As we said in the beginning, we hate asterisks and laundry lists. This is why we present you with the real world gains you can expect to see on stock vehicles right out of the box. Adding additional modifications such as a header, performance exhaust, high flow cat, etc... will only improve upon these base numbers!
2.5 liter

We did not forget about all you 2.5 liter 4 banger guys who are typically more power hungry than the rest. Unfortunately, we were not able to get dyno results. So with great reluctance, we have to refer to "seat of the pants" impression. We used a highly built 98 Jeep Wrangler equipped with a K&N cone filter, 5 speed transmission, 35" tires and 4.88 gears.

What was immediately noticeable with the Torque Monster installed was the off-the-line acceleration. Even with proper gearing, 35" tires are still very heavy. The Torque Monster gave the engine enough extra grunt to minimize the amount of clutch slip needed to get rolling. For the first time in many years, this little 2.5 accelerated like it did the day it was brought home on stock tires.

The standing start was not the only place we saw improvements. Rolling down the highway, from 2500 rpm's to redline the little four banger felt stronger. The gears could be held longer on extended hill climbs without requiring the usual downshifts.
Mileage Gains This is a really tough one to share. Not because the product fails to deliver, but because of the numerous variables that can affect gas mileage. Most notable is driving style. As people install performance modifications, their foot tends to get heavier and typically gas mileage goes down.

For those that can keep their foot out of the gas pedal, a fuel improvement of 2-4 mpg has been common between the 4 vehicles involved with testing the Torque Monster.

Final Thoughts

There are a number of throttle body spacers on the market. All seem to come with the aforementioned asterisks and laundry lists of modifications required to try and duplicate their performance boasts. They never seem to tell you the straight answer as to what you, Joe average, can expect to see in real world performance.

However, the Torque Monster delivers repeatable performance. Ideal for those of us that want the "straight answer" as to what we are getting for our money.
